Abstract.

The general marine environment, namely the ‘wind-wave-current’ system, can develop into a typhoon, roger wave, internal wave, or other extraordinary situations under specific circumstances, which significantly impacts offshore engineering structures and the safety of life and property in coastal areas. Given the characteristics of marine disasters in the South China Sea - the frequent occurrence of internal waves-we discuss the generation mechanism and detection methods of internal solitary waves and their impact on marine engineering. In particular, we show that a large-amplitude internal solitary wave can excite a fully localized ‘rip’ region on the sea surface, called the ‘surface signature’ or ‘tide rip’ in the literature. This phenomenon is much like Bohr’s model of the hydrogen atom in the semi-classical limit in quantum mechanics. We describe the reasons for these peculiar wave phenomena based on modeling, numerical simulation, and multi-scale analysis. In the end, studies of internal oceanic waves are generalized to the atmosphere with particular attention to arched undular bores and the Kelvin wake.

报告人简介:

王展,中国科学院力学研究所研究员、博士生导师、学术委员会副主任。本科与硕士毕业于南京大学,2012年获威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校应用数学博士学位。毕业后曾先后担任伦敦大学学院研究助理(2012-2014)和巴斯大学数学科学系讲师(2014-2016)。主要从事水动力学、环境流体力学、地球物理流体力学、流动稳定性等方向的理论与应用基础研究。
